Oil of Olay Review and $100 Gift Card Giveaway!

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and OLAY.

Sunscreen and mascara: for the better part of a decade that was the sum total of my daily make-up regimen. The former because my Goth skin burns like eggs on a manhole cover in Phoenix (used to live there, it really works!) and the latter so that I could cry black tears like all my friends when we watched Steel Magnolias for the 100th time. In the past I've prided myself on this low-maintenance-ness but then 30 hit and I realized that that is something only 20-year-olds can feel proud about. Once you're expected to show up to pack meetings and the preschool recital and, heaven help me, business meetings low-maintenance can just look lazy.

I always swore that when the time came I would age gracefully and not be one of those women who buy tons of expensive creams and potions trying to turn back the inevitable progression of nature. Truth to be told is that while I'm still not super into make-up I do like looking awake, pretty and pleasant and lately I've been finding that that happens less and less on its own. It's a sad and ironic fact that as you get older and need more sleep to look alert, your kids decide that rest is for wusses and the crack of dawn must celebrated with warm sippy cups and wet diapers. Daily. I used to think that all those "fine lines" commercials talked about were those little crinkles you get around your eyes when you smile and then immediately go away when you stop grinning - after all that's what all the models on the commercials look like! - but I am beginning to realize that those smile lines are hanging around long after I stop smiling. Along with a few of their friends.

It's a weird paradox we live in - on one hand we're trying to learn to accept ourselves while being bombarded with images of Demi Moore who has looked 20 years old for the past 3 decades but on the other hand, every woman makes some concessions to beauty and if a little cream will make you look and feel a little perkier then why not? So you will not be surprised when the other day found me discussing face and eye creams with the Gym Buddies (all except Allison who at 25 is the baby of our group).

I needed something easy - sunscreen and mascara, remember? - and something that doesn't cost $120 an ounce. So I was excited to see that Olay came out with a "Total Effects" line designed to be exactly that. I got to try out the "line and dark circle minimizing brush." It's a little brush that you click like a pen to fill with liquid makeup that covers dark circles, conceals and plumps up fine lines. While it didn't quite match my skin tone - I am Casper's long-lost sister - hopefully they'll be coming out with a few more shade options because it is handy to be able to cover all those bases with one swipe.

  1. Also being the palest person ever I have inherent, never go away no matter how much sleep I get, dark circles under my eyes. Light concealer for that and a little blush so I have SOME color is pretty much all I have time for. Oh, and sunscreen moisturizer of course.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I don't leave the house without concealer (inherited under-eye circles unfortunately!), a quick brushing of foundation, some white eyeshadow underneath my eyebrows to highlight them, and some Vaseline lip therapy <--I'm addicted!

  3. Um...my daily makeup routine takes about 15 minutes. *Deep breath*: SPF Moisturizer, eye cream, eye shadow, eye liner, curl lashes, 2 coats mascara, undereye concealer, primer, foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, fill in eyebrows. Then...get to work and hear someone tell me that I look tired LOL. :0)

LMG. Not sure how to comment by using my e-mail address but you can reach me at two and a half at gmail dot com.

  4. I have dark circles, and I use Neutrogena undereye cream, curl my lashes, and apply mascara. Voila!

  5. Sunscreen
    Foundation
    Eyeshadow
    Eyeliner
    Mascara
    Lip gloss or lipstick!
Would love to win - thanks!

  6. Curl lashes
    Eye liner
    Mascara
Some of that long-lasting lipstick in a shade a smidge darker than my lips so it looks like I *have* lips.

I do go through phases of wearing sunscreen...I guess I should be much more diligent about it.

  7. OMG - with age, I just have almost given up there is so much to cover - I always take my sunglasses, ;-), but I always put on lipstick & now, with the age skin issues, I always put on some king of face cover up!

  8. Eyeshadow, undereye cream and mascara. 2 young kids, I don't have a ton of time so minimal is better

  11. My beauty routine is moisturizer (with SPF!), earrings, and out the door. I'm a simple lass.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well I'm still in my mid-20s, so this might change in a few years...

At the moment, my routine is: wash my face while I'm in the shower (sometimes in the evening, sometimes in the morning, depends on when I work out), swipe with toner after I get out of the shower. In the morning (post shower, if I didn't shower the night before), I apply mascara and eyeliner.

That's it. Sunscreen if it's sunny, though I have to apply spf 55+ every 45 minutes or I burn (you, casper and I are triplets, apparently), and there's no point in applying it as I'm getting ready if I'm gonna have to apply it again before being out in the sun. Oh, I do brush my teeth at the same time I do my makeup - does that count?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hm, I just put on oil of olay lotion. If I'm feeling super girly I'll put on mascara and lip gloss.

    ReplyDelete
  14. For a workday, I use moisturizer, then some yellow stuff that covers the under eye circles, followed by powder, blush, eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick. If it's a weekend, I may just go with powder, eyeshadow, and lipstick. And always moisturizer. My skin is so dry!

    ReplyDelete
  15. wow, great giveaway! For me it depends on the day, sometimes I go without make up if i don't plan on seeing many people or just friends and family. If I wear something, under eye concealer is a MUST if I don't want people to think I've been in a fight. I'm serious, I've been asked this question before and it was only because I had decided not to wear my concealer :\ For work or going out, and also based on how confident I'm feeling, I'll add a swipe of blush and mascara.
For this summer since I plan to spend a lot of time outside and Houston is sunny, I found physicians formula has a powder with spf 50, score!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Most days I use lotion with spf, concealer, blush, powder, eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara. The eyeliner is the one that I wouldn't leave the house without. Whenever I don't wear it, people tell me I look tired - ha ha.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Until just a few months ago, I was a walk-out-the-door (not even SPF or mascara), but now I'm finding that if I take three minutes (yeah, I timed myself) to brush on some powder and a bit of mascara then I feel a lot better about going out. So right now I have a three-minute routine that seems to be working well. hopefully it won't get much longer than that, though ...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can't leave the house without foundation and (at the very least) eyeliner. My skin is pretty blotchy and foundation really evens it out and hides the many, many flaws. Also, if I don't wear at least eyeliner, I spend the day telling people that, no, I'm not tired and/or sick.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is weird, but I cannot leave the house (even for the gym!) without eyebrow pencil! I'm a blond who dyes red, and I must have my brows matching! Then mascara, blush, bronzed, good to go!

  21. I want a gift card because I am a devoted SPF user. I use it everyday because I am so scared of looking like leather when I'm older!

    ReplyDelete
  22. My routine is pretty quick. Moisturizer, powder, blush/bronzer, quick swipe of eyeshadow and mascara. And oh my gosh!!! How could I forget??? Undereye concealer. A VERY expensive concealer but it works. And that is what I can't leave my house without!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh I never leave the house without putting on a touch of foundation and my powder. If I forget lipstick, I always have chapstick with me to keep my lips from being dry.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't leave the house without eyeliner :) Also spf moisturizer and some brow pencil (my eyebrows are really light and I like them to stand out more)

    ReplyDelete
  25. My typical routine is to clean/moisturize first. Then vaseline on the lips and my eyeliner and brows (because I have next to none!). On fancy days I do the whole bronzer and highlighter and add eye shadow.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I recently decided that I won't leave the house anymore without eyeliner on...so far, I have not done a good job at keeping that resolution.
I generally wear a light powder, some blush, eyeliner, and mascara. If I'm going out, I'll put eye shadow on, but not often.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Luckily my profession (professing at college students) encourages women to under-do the makeup. I typically do fine with just mascara and maybe some shadow, lipstick if I'm feeling adventurous. I only go the whole powder, blush, etc. route for dates. I'd love to do eye liner, but I'm too blind to put it on without my glasses, and with my glasses... well you see the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Will not leave the house without my mascara & lip gloss.

  31. I'm super pale and have constant dark circles under my eyes, so a good concealer is a must (Amazing Cosmetics concealer is, hands down, the best I've ever found). I also have to wear blush or I look totally dead. Most days I also wear foundation and lipstick, and if I'm feeling really ambitious I'll use mascara.

  32. 1. Wash face with Neutrogena face wash
    2. Slather Clinque emergency gel over my zits (and hope the benzoyl peroxide doesn't bleach everything I own)
    3. Moisturize with Oil of Olay SPF moisturizer
    4. Brush on Bare minerals powder foundation
    5. Add Clinque blush
    6. Drugstore eyeshadow
    7. More (darker) eyeshadow as eyeliner. Real eyeliner scares me.

I still have really dark undereye circles so I've just given up trying to cover them. And I have no idea what to do about the zits that pop up as soon as the weather gets warmer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Will not leave the house without concealer. My dark circles are frightening.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm pretty LM. My go-to item is moisturizer/sunscreen with "glow"; if I'm feeling fancy I'll add tinted moisturizer for a smoother finish and blush so I don't look so pale. Also, tinted lip balm is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  35. My go-to face: concealer, powder, blush, mascara, and Badger Balm lip balm (the cocoa one is out of this world).

    ReplyDelete
  36. On workdays I use Oil of Olay moisturizer, Bare Minerals foundation, eyeliner, mascara and blush. Weekends it's moisturizer only (unless there is a shindig!)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Unfortunately, it is cover up. I always thought I would be done with pimples after high school.

    Oh well :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm not an "always have to have some before leaving the house" person, but if I'm trying to look particularly nice, it's blush and mascara at a minimum, probably foundation as well. Eye shadow and lip gloss are extras; I never did figure out how to use eye liner.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My skincare routine is retinoid wash and moisturizer in the morning (plus zit cream on anything red and angry), and salicylic acid wash and prescription zit cream at night. My ultimate goal in life is to completely obliterate acne.

As far as makeup, for work my bare minimum is concealer, blush, and mascara. Usually there's a bit of eyeshadow thrown in there as well, but its not required. On weekends, I try to let my face breath. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sunscreen face lotion, light powder, eyeliner and mascara!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm still in the sunscreen/moisturizer + mascara camp, but with 32 being my next birthday I definitely need to change that! I have very dry skin so something to moisturize my face is a definite must, but most of the time makeup is an afterthought.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I just like to look like I've got nice skin, so my routine is a quick rinse with warm water, a bit of moisturizer, and an all-over sweep of loose concealer powder. It's rare that I leave the house without that.

When I'm making an effort I'll add a glowy blush on my cheeks and eyelids, and when I'm really making an effort I add eyeshadow, tinted lip gloss, mascara, and eyeliner.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think my routine would be considered a non-makeup routine. I leave the house most mornings with a completely naked face. On days I'm being fancy (or actually got out of bed on time), I'll moisturize and throw on some mascara. I tend to leave the makeup for going out on evenings and weekends.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't have a "can't live the house" routine. After I drop the kids off at school - I try to head straight to the gym to get my workout out of the way. But after I shower - I always scrub my face with neutrogena daily cleanser followed by Clinque's clarifying lotion and finally Olay Complete UV moisture creme. Helps keep my skin hydrated and fresh!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I put moisturize on, if I remeber. Otherwise nothing else, lazy mostly. I also could be related to Casper, maybe a 2nd cousin...

    ReplyDelete
  46. If I'm going to work, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, lip gloss. If I'm going to the gym, sunscreen.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I just brush on some bare minerals foundation and apply some mascara. BAM! Out the door. I just don't have it in me to spend more than about a minute on makeup.
Sometimes though, if I am feeling super fancy after a long day, I'll do the whole mineral mask thing, complete with cucumbers on my eyes. Then I get dual pleasure of refreshed eyeballs and entertaining my room mate.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love makeup. Daily before work I apply, foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, blush/bronzer. Since I have a 2-year-old, I slack a little on the weekend. Get me out for the night though...watch out!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I hate leaving the house without:
    1) undereye concealer
    2) a quick, all-over brush of bare minerals foundation
    3) a brush of bare minerals warmth (sort-of like bronzer but better!) on the cheeks.

I also usually wear eye shadow, eye liner, and mascara.

I also use oil of olay cream moisturizer at night. I used to use the 7 total effects moisturizer (which I love), but I have a hard time coughing up $30 a bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have a pretty standard routine - and will only leave the house without having completed it if it is an emergency like a child has sawed off a limb with a butter knife!
    - cleanse - moisturize - conceal - foundation - powder - eyeliner - eye shadow - blush- lips
    Then I do my hairs!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Since (A) hitting my almost mid-30s, and (B) becoming a lawyer, I've determined that a little make-up is my friend (and helps me look professional).

    Usually I wear:
    1) Physician's formula mineral powder foundation
    2) Neutrogena blush palette
    3) Almay eyeshadow (for brown eyes)
    4) Lipstick

The one thing I ALWAYS wear is lipstick. I read once that people with brown eyes should always wear lipstick (blue eyes = eye makeup) because it makes their features pop. That is defintiely true for me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Diorshow mascara. Sometimes a neutral glittery eyeshadow palate if I have an extra two minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ha! I totally know what you mean about needed a little help in the 30's cause otherwise "you can just look lazy"..:) I,too, am uber pale but luckily I live in Alaska so I just blend in. Unfortunately, I also hardly have any eyebrows so an eyebrow pencil is a must for me. I like the Olay eye creams too for puffiness in the morning. Also, I found that Burts Bee's baby cream works well on my face to keep it moisterized and is not harsh at all on the skin.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I basically just put on mascara (always trying different kinds) and my Alba Lip Balm in either Pineapple Quench or Coconut Cream. Love that stuff! For special occasions, I'll put on eyeshadow and blush, too.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I do not leave the house without concealer to provide some coverage, eyeliner, and several coats of mascara.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Mascara and under-eye concealer!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I do the preschool drop off on the way to the gym with a washed, moisturized face.

Going anywhere but the gym it's a a minimum
    1.) moisturizer
    2.) foundation/concealer
    3.) bronzer
    4) lip gloss
    5) mascara

Add lipstick, eye liner and shadow if I'm actually dressing up.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I MUST have: Neutral colored eyeshadow, mascara, and blush to leave the house. Sometimes I'll put on tinted moisturizer but only for the SPF!

  60. Mascara, unless I'm crying tears of joy, of course!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am not leaving the house without concealer and mineral powder over the top.
If I'm leaving the house AND I'm going to see actual humans I also go the mascara... and probably the eyeliner... since we're being honest :-)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Powder, eyliner, mascara, lipstick.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I wear concealer, foundation, blush, eyeshadow, mascara, and often a swipe of lip gloss. That is, unless I forget and stagger out the door looking like Medusa, having forgotten to even drag a brush through my hair, like this morning. THAT'S attractive.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love Olay and use it every night.
During the day, I just use a little concealer and powder. :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I use Mary Kay timewise cleanser and moisturizer.. morning and night.. and WOW can I tell a difference.. I"m 49... I used to have to wear foundation if I went out of the house.. now?? nope... mascara?? YES definitely.. I wear full makeup monday through friday with foundation.. but on the weekend?? I'm a clean face with mascara girlie

    ReplyDelete
  66. I will still leave the house without makeup on the weekends, but it's because I don't care, not because I don't need it! I do care during the week, though. I use sunscreen, concealer (horrific dark circles), mineral foundation (rosacea and uneven skintone), blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and lipgloss or lipstick. It sounds like a lot, but I go easy on everything, so I don't look TOO made up. Just hiding the aging skin a little!

    ReplyDelete
  67. If I can have just a little eye liner and a light powder, I am good to go. But if I want to feel a little fancier, I'll daub on some lipstick...

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm under 25, so still in that "teenager" stage with my skin. I have to start with washing my face, followed by a toner and then 15 spf moisturizer. Then I use concealer under my eyes and anywhere that's particularly red and a powder over that. Most days it ends there, but if I feel like it I add eye makeup (primer, eye shadow, liner, and mascara). I've always got lip gloss with me, too. It seems like a lot, but usually only takes 5 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  69. at 36, all i wear is loose powder by bare essentuals. for the first 31 years, i couldn't be bothered to wear anything.

    ReplyDelete
  72. oh geez, i rarely wear makeup, but i'd say mascara. if i had to pick something, it'd be mascara!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. i'd never leave the house (well, shared apartment since i'm a broke student) without:
    -washing my face with water
    -aveeno daily scrub
-chaga cream (for redness - it smells a little funky so i actually usually do it at night if i can)
    -EYELINER. black.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Sunscreen moisturizer, sunscreen lip balm, a little powder, and barely-there brown eye liner (only on the top lids). I like to look natural...but a little better! Must remember the lip balm when I leave the house -- sometimes I end up with 4 tubes at the bottom of my purse!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I keep mine simple: moisturizer, powder foundation, mascara and brow liner--that's it!

  77. I like just lip gloss & mascara for those days when i do not want to mess with "the works". That's simple & makes you look at least slightly polished!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't do much for make up -- daily it's at most some concealer. When I actually want to wear makeup, I throw on some Cover Girl Tru Blend (or whatever that's called) powder, light shimmery eyeshadow, mascara, and a bit of lip gloss.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Eye cream, MAC Studio Fix powder, blush, mascara and lip gloss - who has time for the rest?!

    ReplyDelete
  80. As pasty as I am, I cannot leave the house without some kind of color on my lips. I can hide under a cute hat if necessary, even pulling the lid way down over my forehead to hide the fact that I have on no eyeliner, mascara or concealer. But the lips, you cannot cover :)

  85. moisturizer is about it for me on most days - working out of the house does *not* do wonders for the makeup routine. On the days I do go into work, a bit of blush, eyeliner, and some lip gloss. I like keeping it simple :).

  95. I've simplified my makeup routine by switching to mineral makeup & mascara. It literally takes me 5 minutes in the morning to get ready, and with a 4 month old in tow, that's perfect! Plus, I love how light it feels on my face. I also shower at night & dry my hair then (the longest thing for me in my beauty routine), so I can just brush, straighten, or pull back & go in the morning, depending on how I'm feeling. I'm a lot less picky about what I look like these days, which is an awesome feeling. :)

  140. I work nights, so for me the trick is to feel awake when everyone else [and my own body] wants to be asleep.

I wash with Noxzema, to wake up my skin, and moisturize with Clinique. A bit of lip gloss, occasionally some sparkle for my hair, and I'm good to go. I won't leave the house without some eye cream though- I've got a little jar in my work bag, so that if I just didn't get enough sleep, or am that dehydrated, that my eyelids start to burn, I've got something to put on. Right now it's Yves Rocher, but when that runs out I'm going to try Olay.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Try not to leave the house without mascara or a little blush though if I'm going to the gym I'll happily go bare faced!

  142. For whatever reason, my face has started a rebellion against me in the last two months - I breakout all over the jaw line and the bottom half of my face. So now my makeup routine is (1) cleaner (2) Oil of Olay moisturizer (3) green spot treatment to balance out the red on all of the acne (4) mineral makeup concealer (5) mineral makeup foundation (6) mascara. This is all so dang time consuming that I have quit worrying about covering up the under eye circles...and then I look up into the mirror in the bathroom at work and scare the heck out of myself. Bleh. I'd love to have something that multi-tasks as part of that routine!
