Oil of Olay Review and $100 Gift Card Giveaway!

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and OLAY.

Sunscreen and mascara: for the better part of a decade that was the sum total of my daily make-up regimen. The former because my Goth skin burns like eggs on a manhole cover in Phoenix (used to live there, it really works!) and the latter so that I could cry black tears like all my friends when we watched Steel Magnolias for the 100th time. In the past I've prided myself on this low-maintenance-ness but then 30 hit and I realized that that is something only 20-year-olds can feel proud about. Once you're expected to show up to pack meetings and the preschool recital and, heaven help me, business meetings low-maintenance can just look lazy.

I always swore that when the time came I would age gracefully and not be one of those women who buy tons of expensive creams and potions trying to turn back the inevitable progression of nature. Truth to be told is that while I'm still not super into make-up I do like looking awake, pretty and pleasant and lately I've been finding that that happens less and less on its own. It's a sad and ironic fact that as you get older and need more sleep to look alert, your kids decide that rest is for wusses and the crack of dawn must celebrated with warm sippy cups and wet diapers. Daily. I used to think that all those "fine lines" commercials talked about were those little crinkles you get around your eyes when you smile and then immediately go away when you stop grinning - after all that's what all the models on the commercials look like! - but I am beginning to realize that those smile lines are hanging around long after I stop smiling. Along with a few of their friends.

It's a weird paradox we live in - on one hand we're trying to learn to accept ourselves while being bombarded with images of Demi Moore who has looked 20 years old for the past 3 decades but on the other hand, every woman makes some concessions to beauty and if a little cream will make you look and feel a little perkier then why not? So you will not be surprised when the other day found me discussing face and eye creams with the Gym Buddies (all except Allison who at 25 is the baby of our group).

I needed something easy - sunscreen and mascara, remember? - and something that doesn't cost $120 an ounce. So I was excited to see that Olay came out with a "Total Effects" line designed to be exactly that. I got to try out the "line and dark circle minimizing brush." It's a little brush that you click like a pen to fill with liquid makeup that covers dark circles, conceals and plumps up fine lines. While it didn't quite match my skin tone - I am Casper's long-lost sister - hopefully they'll be coming out with a few more shade options because it is handy to be able to cover all those bases with one swipe.
